Long Response:

In today's paper on page A4 there is a story about Florida lawmakers debating gun measures. Last month there was a shooting at a high school in Florida that left 17 people dead. If you haven't seen or heard anything about the shooting, please read the story. Otherwise please answer the following questions:

1. Explain why you think guns should be controlled more strictly, or not.
I do think that guns need to be controlled much more strictly. First of all, the shooter was able to get his hands on an illegal gun that will rapid fire when holding down the trigger. Second of all, that gun was what took the death of 17 innocent people. Guns are too easy to get.
2. What do you think the response might be if something were to happen at a school in Austin?
I feel like the response would be the same. It doesn't matter where it happened. What happened is what matters. My opinion would be the same and I think that the government would be making the same decisions.
3. Explain why so-called assault weapons like the AR-15 should be banned, or not?
Ok, yes guns should be much harder to get. I think that the assault weapons should not be able to get. I know that people like to hunt and they need good guns for that. I know cops need guns. But, there is no need to own an assault weapon. Would a cop need it so that they can go out and shoot more innocent people too? Would a hunter need a gun to continuously shoot at an animal? Absolutely not.
4. What kind of discussions have you had with family and/or friends regarding that event and the responses the past month?
I've heard all my classmates and teachers talking about how scary it is. My mom and I talked about how we all need to be very aware of our surroundings and to always say 'I love you' because you never know what the day will bring. I've heard the news that they feel bad for the shooter. I've heard  other news stations say that the shooter is terrible.
5. How would you actively participate in the process of trying to enact change for something you felt strongly about?

I would write to the government or news or go to a protest with others.
