Final Exam Part 3

                                           Allowances

Many families give their children an allowance each week for many reasons. Allowances are very good for children in many ways, When they have a job and they are living on their own, they will be able to balance their spending and savings.

Some parents give their children allowances regardless of their behavior because they believe that this teaches them about finance. While others, give them an allowance as a reward for completing chores and or good grades.

In my opinion, I believe that children should only receive an allowance as a reward, not as a way to keep their children behaving. Children should behave on their own rather than needing to be paid for it.

Kids should start getting allowances as soon as they start talking about and asking for money. This normally happens at a pretty young age so, you can start of kids with small chores. Such as picking up toys, taking out the trash, doing the dishes, etc.

Once they get older, it can change to things like walking the dog, vacuuming, sweeping, cleaning the toilet, doing the dinner preparations, dusting, feeding pets, etc. Who wants to clean the toilet if they have a kid that can do it, right?

If your children work for the money, it teaches them skills for when they're older. They learn things like to work hard and to appreciate that hard earned money. Also, you get a clean house without having to hire a maid. The money is better to have because your kids will know that they have earned it.

Secondly, when the money is rewarded for good grades, children are pushed to work harder in school. They study hard and try hard to strive for the allowance. They also get rewarded with smarts.

On the other hand, there is the parents that just give their kids money. Now what are they learning from that? They expect for the money to just fall in their laps for being good. A child should know how to act without getting paid for it.

To fix this, they can have a talk with them and tell them that they need to do chores and put effort into them and treat it like a real job because that’s what it is. This can help your child understand that in order to get money, they need to work hard.

Another thing is that they don’t want their kids to think that they’re getting money handed to them. So, they should teach their kids about financial literacy and they could make the child split up money into two groups. One group is savings and the other is for spending.

So, parents should give their kids allowances so that they can learn the responsibilities of earning money and so that they have their own money to spend instead of their parents. This will help them learn the important life skills that aren’t taught in school.
